Streaky windows are one of the most common frustrations we hear about, and the cause is almost never the spray being used. It is nearly always one of three things.
Cleaning in direct sunlight
This is by far the most common mistake. When sun hits the glass, the solution evaporates before it can be wiped away, leaving behind exactly the residue you were trying to remove.
Work on the shaded side of the property and follow the shade around as the day progresses. On an overcast day you can clean any window at any time, which is why professionals often prefer grey weather for glass.
Too much product
More solution does not mean cleaner glass. Excess product is the second leading cause of streaking because there is simply more residue left behind than a cloth can lift.
A light, even mist is enough for typical interior glass. If the solution is running down the pane, there is too much on it.
The cloth matters more than the spray
Paper towels shed fibres and push residue around. Cotton rags often carry fabric softener from the wash, which smears immediately on contact with glass.
Use two clean microfibre cloths — one damp to clean, one completely dry to buff. Wash microfibre without fabric softener or it will streak every time regardless of technique.
- One damp microfibre cloth for cleaning
- One dry microfibre cloth for the final buff
- A rubber-bladed squeegee for larger panes
- No fabric softener, ever, on cleaning cloths
Direction gives you diagnostics
Wipe the interior in horizontal strokes and the exterior in vertical strokes. When a streak appears later you will immediately know which side it is on, which saves cleaning both faces to fix one.
Finish every pane with a dry buff, working from the top down so any drips are caught on the way.
