Almost every home we visit is tidy. Surfaces are clear, floors are swept, and nothing looks neglected. But tidy and deep-cleaned are two entirely different states, and the gap between them widens quietly over months. Here is how to tell where your home actually stands.
The short answer
For most Lancaster County homes, a full deep clean twice a year holds the standard well — typically once in spring and again before the holidays. Homes with pets, young children, or heavy foot traffic usually need three or four, spaced roughly every three to four months.
That assumes some form of regular upkeep in between. If your home has never had a deep clean, or it has been more than a year, the first one will take significantly longer than the ones that follow.
What actually gets missed
Regular cleaning covers what you see and touch daily. Deep cleaning covers everything else — and that list is longer than most people expect.
- Grout lines in showers, backsplashes, and tiled floors
- The interiors of cabinets, drawers, and closets
- Baseboards, door frames, and light switch plates
- Behind and beneath movable furniture and appliances
- Window tracks, sills, and interior glass
- Extractor vents, ceiling fans, and light fixtures
Signs it is overdue
There are reliable tells. Grout that has shifted from white to grey is the clearest. Run a finger along the top edge of a door frame — if it comes away grey, dust has been building for months. A kitchen that smells faintly of cooking oil even after the counters are wiped means residue has settled on the surfaces around and above the stove.
The other honest signal is hesitation before guests arrive. If you find yourself apologising for parts of your home you cannot quickly fix, those are exactly the areas a deep clean addresses.
Building a schedule that holds
The most effective pattern we see is a deep clean to establish a baseline, followed by recurring visits to maintain it. The deep clean does the heavy work once; the recurring service stops it from ever returning to that state.
That combination is almost always cheaper over a year than repeated emergency deep cleans, because each subsequent deep clean has far less ground to recover.
